About Kuantan

Over the past decade, rapid development has pushed Kuantan into the Malaysian East Coast’s most important social and economic hub. Though it is not renowned for tourism, there are still a phenomenal range of landmarks and highlights ready to be uncovered here. Many activities are centred on the stunning beaches that hug the town, but mosques and natural splendours also play an important role.

Don’t Miss

Kuantan boasts an exciting array of attractions that will entertain tourists for days on end.

The golden beaches that flank Kuantan are undoubtedly the city’s highlight. There are several beaches just minutes from the downtown area including Teluk Cempedak and Batu Hitam. However, there are other sites like Cherating, which is a popular beach town some 30 minutes from downtown Kuantan. There is a magnificent Club Med hotel located here.

Parks and natural landmarks also entice travellers. The Elephant Sanctuary is the perfect place to witness elephants in a safe environment, and the Teruntum Mini Zoo boasts an impressive night safari. Close to the beach at Cherating is a rare turtle sanctuary too, where sea turtles venture to lay eggs each year. Naturally, this landmark is well protected. Several waterfalls, including the picturesque Sungai Pandan Water Fall and Jerangkang Water Fall, will lure nature lovers too.

The city’s well-known State Mosque is found in the heart of the downtown area, and welcomes hundreds of visitors daily. Close to the mosque stand a large number of colonial-style buildings that are also well worth exploring.

Restaurants and Bars

The most popular foods sold in Kuantan are the simple yet satisfying salted fish snacks. Fish are salted and sun-dried before being sold throughout Kuantan. Malaysian style satay and roti dishes are sold everywhere by street vendors, and local Indian restaurants are popular also; they commonly serve dishes like tandoori chicken and nasi kandar. One of Kuantan’s more renowned dining areas is along Jalan Tun Ismail, where dozens of magnificent restaurants await.

Shopping

When it comes to shopping, Kuantan does not lack possibilities. There are several large malls located within the city. The East Coast Mall is one of the newest shopping spots on offer, boasting plenty of fashion labels and restaurants, including Giordano and Samsonite. Berjaya Megamall is older, yet it still welcomes thousands of shoppers daily. Teruntum Complex is the oldest major mall in the city, but is currently undergoing a facelift to help with future growth.
