About Johor Bahru

Peninsula Malaysia’s southern-most city, Johor Bahru (JB), is an industrial town that is also the capital of the state of Johor. Johor Bahru is certainly a welcoming city that is well known for its comparatively cheap shopping and interesting dining experiences.

Johor Bahru has a handful of cultural and religious sites scattered across the city.

The capital of Johor is home to numerous mosques and temples, some of which are remarkably beautiful. Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Temple is renowned as the first glass temple in the world. Its interior is full of glass tiles, making it a unique and gorgeous experience for visitors. Another popular religious site in Johor Bahru is Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque. This large architectural marvel rests upon a small hill and provides stunning views of the Straits of Johor.

Plenty of galleries and museums can be found within JB. Art enthusiasts will adore the JB Art Gallery, which houses modern masterpieces and heritage-inspired exhibits. The Chinese Heritage Museum takes visitors through Johor Bahru’s rich Chinese history. Johor Bahru enjoys a wealth of history.

Danga Bay has gradually become the trendiest and most entertaining site in the city. Recent developments have transformed this waterfront site into a bustling spot that boasts the World Petting Zoo and World Theme Park. It is the most family-friendly landmark in Johor Bahru.

Makan in JB

Chinese, Indian and Malay cuisine are the most dominant culinary options in Johor Bahru. The hawker centres are recommended sites when tourists want a cheap dining option with the locals. Dishes like roti canai and nasi lemak are popular options in JB. Restaurants are spread across the city, and compared to nearby Singapore the food is reasonably cheap. There isn’t much in the way of bars in Johor Bahru. However, visitors will still find a few Western-style watering holes, including T.G.I. Fridays and the Duty Free Zone.

Shopping in JB

One of Johor Bahru’s most enticing features is its shopping scene. There are dozens of shopping malls, department stores and hypermarkets, all of which offer a variety of products at cheaper prices than in neighbouring Singapore.

When it comes to accessibility, City Square is JB’s leading mall, while KSL City is certainly the largest and most modern shopping haven in the city. There is also the Jalan Segget Bazaar, which sells clothes, watches, accessories and a range of other popular items every day of the week.
