Tuaran is both a town and district within the western coastal division of Sabah. The town is very close to Kota Kinabalu and is bordered by Tuaran River. It is an extremely scenic location with great places to stay and amazing local cuisine. Biking and hiking around the area makes for a memorable adventure, while many people opt to go fishing off the coast. Here we’ll be highlighting the best of Tauran.
This is a fantastic tropical getaway which provides you with everything that you need to relax. From Tauran you can access a range of other areas easily, for those times when you are looking for even more variety. At just 33 kilometres, or 20 miles, from Kuala Lumpur, this town is extremely well connected by road.
One of the higher priced but better places to stay is the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort. The rates are as to be expected at a luxury resort but the services, surroundings and amenities are top class. One of the best features of staying here is the easy access to their private nature reserve. You are rewarded with the rare opportunity to see Orangutans up close, amongst many other species of flora and fauna.
The Mimpian Jadi Resort is the other major accommodation option in Tauran. This location receives less visitors than its competition but still makes for a wonderfully quiet getaway. The grounds and golf course give you tranquillity, while for the package provided the rates are quite competitive.
For a place to stay which is far easier on your budget, try any of the homestays or hotels in the surrounding kampongs of Tauran. From basic accommodation at dirt cheap rates to 3-star hotels, your options are wide open.
The most prominent tourist attraction in Tauran is the tower water villages built on stilts. These stilted homes can be seen scattered across the coast, granting amazing views over the ocean. Be on the lookout for stilted accommodation as some of the best rates are found in this form of lodging, while the view could not be better.
Just outside of the town centre you will see a massive nine-story pagoda towering. The Ling San Pagoda is a landmark which can’t be missed.
Have fun playing a range of watersport. Shangri La’s Resort & Spa facilities here extend to fun in the sun and Watersport. Jet-skiing, ocean kayaking, boogie boarding, banana boat rides, catamaran trips, windsurfing, para-sailing, hydrobikes, wake-boarding and standing paddle boarding are all on offer. You will never see the sea the same again.
Bahar Wine is a traditional liquor made by the Dusun Lotud people indigenous to Tauran. It is brewed from coconut sap and a particular tree bark. This highly pungent wine is scientifically proven to have a fantastic range and concentration of antioxidants. You can’t take it home though for it usually spoils within a day.
Tauran mee is a dish which was invented by the Hakka Chinese community within this region. Battered and fried until crunchy, these unique noodles are then served with slices of sweetened roast pork and traditional egg rolls.
