Kapitan Keling Mosque

Kapitan Keling Mosque showing a mosque, heritage architecture and religious aspects
This impressive Indian-Islamic architectural jewel adds to the potpourri of cultural diversity that is Penang.

Whitewashed stone walls enthroned with large Moghul-style domes, crescents and stars, and a distinctively Indian-Islamic minaret where the calls to prayer can be heard, sets the Kapitan Keling Mosque apart from the others. Wander up the sweepingly long walkway and around the 3-hectare grounds to soak up the calm atmosphere afforded by celestial white walls and serene landscaped gardens. Beginning in 1801 as a basic square room built from Indian stone by Indian traders based in Penang, Kapitan Keling Mosque has seen several transformations throughout the years, to become the sublime structure you see today. As this is a working mosque, you'll be granted a welcome insight into the Muslim faith. You will witness worshippers praying, washing themselves in the ablution pools, and sometimes just enjoying the peace and tranquillity within the sacred grounds.Make your way to the Information Centre on the ground floor of the minaret for a guided tour with members of the Islamic Propagation Society offering interesting background and details. Or, simply stroll around the well-kept grounds on your own to admire the arabesques of geometric and floral design motifs, and the polished white marble floors laden with prayer rugs. In the prayer hall, a magnificent chandelier hangs from the ceiling, surrounded by Islamic calligraphy panels and a large stained glass panel featuring the Star of David, an arresting sight not to be missed. The Kapitan Keling Mosque sits on Jalan Masjid in central Georgetown. Open in the afternoons daily, with reduced hours on Fridays, admission is free. Respectful attire covering arms and legs is required to enter the mosque. Robes and shawls are provided free upon entry.
