One of Indonesia’s most important sites is the beautiful Borobudur Temple. This world-famous religious site is the largest Buddhist-related monument in the world, and has been standing for more than 1,200 years. The temple was built in three tiers, with the tallest point standing more than 40 metres high.
The temple is actually designed as a stupa. From the top, visitors don’t just get a great view of the temple itself, but also the surrounding valleys and mountains that encase this phenomenal man-made landmark. It wasn’t always like this though. Up until the mid-20th century, the temple was buried under layers of ash. However, it was cleaned up and restored during the 1970s to its present day glory.
