I would really give this resort a 3.5. There is a lot to love here- the grounds a beautiful and very well maintained, and the room we stayed in (Dunas) was very nice with convenient tech and ocean views. The entertainment, specifically the Imperial Band was excellent, and most of the staff were great, the activities directors were engaging and Maria at Mar y Tierra was a standout. The spa was great.
However, the food was very disappointing. La Hacienda & L’Olivio were good as was Mar y Tierra which actually offered probably the best service of any restaurant. Everywhere else was disappointing and we tried every restaurant. The duck I had at L’Alsace was so over cooked it wasn’t discernible as duck. I wasn’t expecting Michelin star meals but for a 5 star resort the food was really subpar. Dining is a big part of vacationing for us so this was the biggest detractor. The drinks were also bad. Don Miguel was much better than any of the other bars as they found ways to balance their drinks but everything else uses terrible artificial sweeteners so we struggled to find something we enjoyed. Finding things to try was a pain because there are no menus onsite (QR code only) and outside the main hub the service is awful.
The room was nice but we chose it for the pool and it was unusably cold. Much colder than ambient temp. Also the filter was so loud you could hear it lying in bed.
Main pool loungers were gone before 10am.
Beautiful but not somewhere we’d want to return to.
