About Taipei

Taiwan’s capital city sits on the northern part of the island nation between the Yangming and the Central Mountains. Taipei is the island’s cultural, financial and governmental centre as well as being a major centre for tourism, with over six million visitors enjoying the city each year.

Don’t Miss

Taipei has much to offer visitors both within the city and in its stunning natural surrounding area.

The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is one of the city’s most famous monuments, and is where the country’s flag is raised every morning. The monument is located at the east end of Memorial Hall Square, also home to the National Theatre and National Concert Hall. The National Taiwan Museum is the oldest museum in the country and is set in an impressive Baroque and Renaissance style building, though the National Palace Museum is the most popular museum in Taipei.

The 508-metre high Taipei 101 is the world’s second tallest skyscraper and one of the city’s most famous icons. The 101-storey building was built to look like bamboo rising from the earth and features an observatory on the 91st floor. Longshan Temple is another famous sight built in 1738 by Fujian settlers. The Buddhist temple is a great example of classic Taiwanese architecture with hints of influence from southern China.

Visitors that want to escape the city should head to the Yangmingshan National Park to go hiking or to soak and relax in its sulphur hot springs. Those on a family holiday should take the kids to the Taipei Zoo, the Children's Recreation Center or the Taipei Water Park.

Restaurants and Bars

Restaurants are located along nearly every street in Taipei serving all sorts of Asian cuisine, as well as local specialities like oyster omelettes, aiyu jelly and Taiwanese sausage. The night markets have the largest and cheapest selection, with the Shilin Night Market the most famous. For fine dining, visitors should try the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei. There is also no shortage of nightlife in Taipei, though the best bars and nightclubs are located in upmarket hotels like the W Taipei and the Grand Hyatt Taipei.

Shopping

The Shinlin Night Market is the most popular place in the city for picking up cheap clothing, while the area around Taipei Main Station is the best place for electronics and cameras. Ximending is a trendy area that is popular among younger fashion conscious shoppers, while those looking for high-end labels shop at the mall attached to the Taipei 101.
