About Yokohama

Japan’s second largest city, Yokohama sits on the western coast of Tokyo Bay. It has being seeing foreigners since the 1850s when its trade port first opened, which today is one of the largest seaports in the world. Yokohama locals are used to hosting travellers and there are numerous hotels to cater to them, including the Hotel New Grand.

Don’t Miss

Yokohama Chinatown is the largest of its kind in Japan and a great place to go for a stroll. It sits close to the waterfront, which has a number of attractions including Yamashita Park. The park is known for its stunning views of the waterfront and the port and is home to numerous trees, flowers and fountains.

The Yamate area of the city was historically known as ‘The Bluff’ due to its many foreign residents, with many old homes still standing today. History buffs will also enjoy the Yokohama Silk Museum and its great collection of silk kimonos and the Yokohama History Museum, which introduces the history of the city from when the port opened to today.

The 296-metre tall Yokohama Landmark Tower is Japan’s second tallest structure, boasting an observation deck on the 69th floor that offers spectacular 360° views of the city. Another great modern feature of the city is the Cosmo Clock 21, which, at 100 metres, is the world’s largest Ferris wheel.

Restaurants and Bars

There are plenty of places to eat in Yokohama, with Japanese cuisine being most popular. Still, there are a few international options, and of course Chinese food in Chinatown. For a quick meal, visitors can head to the shopping malls or the Cubic Plaza Shin-yokohama. The best fine dining in the city is in the upscale hotels like The Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu and the InterContinental Yokohama Grand. Bars and cafés are easy to come by; some are typical Japanese bars serving sake and others are British-style pubs.

Shopping

The five-block Motomachi Shopping Street is one of Yokohama’s most famous shopping districts with its numerous boutiques and shops. The Minato Mirai 21 district is also a haven for fashion lovers, having numerous shopping malls and strips within it selling the hippest Japanese fashion. For known international labels shoppers should visit Mitsui Outlet Park, while Yodobashi Yokohama is the best place to shop for electronics.
