"The location in downtown Chicago was excellent - easy walking down Mag Mile and to the lake, lots of Uber/Lyft options available, close to the L-system. It was generally pretty quiet. The buffet breakfast included was one of the better ones I have had at any hotel recently. The breakfast staff was incredibly friendly and sociable. Food options were good. The hotel lobby was nice and it makes a good first impression. It kind of goes downhill once you get to the rooms. What is shown in the photos is not what you get. The bathroom was small and no ventilation, the interior was very dated and simple and there honestly were not enough plugs, especially near the beds for charging devices at night, the carpet was worn and the was very little on the walls so it looked stark. My wife checked in first and she shared that she had to request another room because the first one had an overwhelming odor of marijuana. Not impressed"

"The Freehand is a funky little hotel located near Michigan Ave and the waterfront in Chicago. The decor is cool, with a dark reddish vibe. There is a comfortable lounge, a nice bar, and a cafe. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. There is a gym though I didn’t see it. And they held onto our suitcases for us after we checked out while we did a day full of activities before going to the airport. Cons - the room and bathroom were small and very tight. Our room door was difficult to open and close. The cafe was not serving breakfast the one day I was there without explanation. The bar had a very small wine selection - no Chardonnay. The front desk was usually manned by only one person and they had to answer the phone while we were trying to check in and out. It was fine for our purposes, and not too expensive, but even though I gave it 4 stars I probably would not stay there again. I need a little more room and doors that close safely."
