Grand Central Hotel Shanghai

"Great location; staff inexperienced"
Hotel has a winning location. Next to Nanjing Rd and 15 walk to the Bund. However, staff are all inexperienced and need more training. When trying to check in at around 12noon, prior to the official check-in time of 2pm, two separate staff tried to pull me out of line saying that check in time was at 2pm. I said I'd like to check if any rooms were available and they were insistent that I should get out of line. I stayed firm and after having them uncomfortably hover next to me while I was waiting, I finally got to the front of the line. As soon as I said I'd like to check in, lo and behold, a room was available. So those two staff were haggling me for no reason. Further, there are only 2 checkin/check-out computers, but 5 staff standing around the check in area, with seemingly no other job than to try to get customers out of the line. I would suggest they invest in 1-2 more check in terminals and redeploy their staff to avoid having customers wait in a long line to check in or out. English language skill is poor. Hotel decor is gaudy, even though they seem to have spent a lot of money on the interior design. Perhaps this is just a matter of taste, but it just seems like money not well spent.

"Great location, well managed hotel"
This hotel is a great find, perfect location, close to everything and feels safe. Their staff speak English, they are all very friendly and eager to help. The bed is unlike the firm mattress in China, they are very comfortable. Hardwood floor is a plus for someone who's allergic to carpet molds. The view from the higher floor is great. The front desk can call taxi for you and usually arrives in 10 minutes. I didn't use the kitchen much, but it looks like it has most everything you need for cooking and utensils included. It feels the hotel is very well managed and runs very efficiently. I got the studio executive with balcony, good size for 2 people. If travelling with family, bedroom suites will work better. I would definitely stay there again next time in Shanghai.

Ascott Huai Hai Road Shanghai - Shanghai Hotels

Ascott Huai Hai Road Shanghai

No 282,Huai Hai Road Central, Shanghai - Map
"Great location"
The hotel is located on Huai Hai Road very close to Xintiandi. It's great for shopping, business or tourists. The room was a service apartment with cooking facilities, a small sitting area and adequately sized separate bedroom. It's clean and generally well run. However try to bring guests to the restaurant for coffee over a meeting and it's impossible. The staff have a can't do attitude. They are not flexible and in fact are obstructive at times. The business lounge is small and not suitable for meetings with no privacy. Go outside to a coffee shop and have that meeting! Dry cleaning costs are reasonable in the hotel, but walk two blocks and save 50% by taking clothes to the cleaners yourself. Same with eat in meals. Call Sherpa's and order what you need for less cost. Overall the location beats many hotels in the city. It's convenient, clean, runs well and having a small American sized refrigerator for food is great. Just don't expect business facilities to be available. A small meeting room for about 3 hours costs an eye watering $650 with the pencils and a bottle of water included. Want coffee? Fruit? You know that's extra!

"Nice hotel close to everything."
Good location. Great for shopping and eating . Love the stay. However, we were upgraded to the club floor, yet, we were not permitted to use the facilities, which we find it unacceptable. We finally talked to the manager on duty and was told they will allow it this time but not the next time. If that is the case, then, they should not upgrade anyone to the club floor unless all courtesy apply.
