"The Onsen (hot spring facilities) was fantastic, especially after a long journey. Breakfast and dinner buffet were excellent. Mostly Japanese food but there are a few choices for those who don't like Japanese food. For me, the meals were great. Sushi, Sashimi, lots of different choices. A true test of Japan. Never had the same thing twice as there were too many choices. Not to mention they had beer, sake and some other alcohols available as part of the buffet. Didn't see anyone abusing the access which is good. The only thing to mention is if you are traveling from Tokyo and are returning there, it would be good to only take a smaller portion of your belongings (send your larger cases to your next hotel) as the rooms are not equipped with closets or drawers so you will be living out of your suitcase. Really wasn't a problem with our two large suitcases. Nice walking path in the back of the facility. Strongly recommend taking a taxi or uber from the train station with your suitcases. We road the bus there which was standing room only along a a very twisty mountain road, OVERALL - WONDERFULL"

"The hotel was so amazing. The view is magnificent. The location is really good. The only thing that i could say that is a bit disappointing is there are stains in the sofa in the living room. Other than that everything is perfect."

"We booked the ryokan with private onsen. It was worth every penny. We got the dinner and Japanese breakfast and was an amazing experience. The give you a yukata slippers and even socks to use. In from of the beautiful building is a garden. Also behind the museum in the corner a beautiful Japanese authentic restaurant, it was just beautiful. It was easy to catch the buses once we figured out which one to take. The outdoor private onsen has the shower next to it and it is also outdoors. The bathroom, toilet is inside. We just loved our stay there. For our second night we opted for the buffet in a sister hotel nearby but we should have stayed for the authentic Japanese dinner for the second time even though it is the same as the previous night. The room was quiet and peaceful. The staff very attentive."

"Matauzakaya Honten was such an amazing experience and location to stay. The staff were all incredibly friendly and the entire place had a very inviting atmosphere. I had a room with an open air onsen, and the staff walked me through all the amenities available to me. From how to work the onsen to a brief tour and history of the property, all the way to the free items and beverages they have, as well as the rooms where you can play games or relax with other guests. When I come back to Japan in the future, this will definitely be a stop on my itinerary again. It was an absolute highlight of my trip."

"we adored Hata-San, our helpful friend at the hotel. the dinner and breakfast were both incredible. bathhouses were relaxing and clean. the Hakone day pass made it so easy to get everywhere but don’t forget to take time at the ryokan to re-center after travel!"
