With Malaysia’s premier motorsports stadium, villages, plantations and beaches, you can catch the Grand Prix or see what life is like outside Kuala Lumpur.

Sepang is a district in southern Malaysia about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Kuala Lumpur. It’s best known as the site of the Sepang International Circuit, which hosts the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix, the Motorcycle Grand Prix and much more. The district is also home to the immense Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Despite all the high-tech infrastructure, you’ll also find small villages, plantations and a beach community at Bagan Lalang.

Get yourself a ticket and see a race at the Sepang International Circuit. Seats at the stadium are affordable, and races run year round. If your timing is right, you’ll see world-class racing such as Formula One, Motor GP and Super GT. If you want a closer look at the track, you can even organise a tour. For an extra bit of fun, check out the stadium’s go-kart track. You can choose a simulated Formula One-style session or just go for a few freestyle laps.

After the race, head out into the countryside to see palm oil plantations and visit local villages. Stop by Sungai Pelek and explore the town. You’ll find some quaint old buildings, cheap food and some interesting shops. Check out the nearby dragon fruit farm to taste the odd-looking but delicious fruit.

Carry on towards the ocean to get to Bagan Lalang, a beach-side town being developed into an ocean-front resort area. Hit the white sandy beach and go for a dip, or just sit back and relax. You can rent out boats or canoes, and fishing enthusiasts are free to drop a line and try their luck. Bird watchers will spot several migratory species. When it’s time for lunch, try the local seafood restaurant and grab a freshly cut coconut.

Sepang is an up-and-coming district just outside the Malaysian capital. It's the country’s top motorsports destination, but also a place to catch a glimpse of life outside the metropolis.
