A rare chance to get up close and personal with sharks, turtles and manta rays…bring your swimmers and jump in!
Located in Cancun's hotel precinct, the Acuario Interactivo is far from being your average aquarium. This really is an interactive space where you'll have the opportunity to get involved and have a swim with some of the marine residents.
For those who aren't feeling like going in for the splash, there's plenty going on in the tanks. Holding somewhere in the region of 106 cubic metres, the 13 tanks aim to recreate the natural habitats of the species they accommodate. You can watch moray eels, jellyfish and clown fish glide noiselessly by, as well as more local sea life such as scorpion fish and piranha who live on the nearby coral reef.
The contact area is the closest you can get to the sea creatures without actually getting into the water. Here you can watch turtles eating out of your hands, stroke manta rays and have a conversation with an inquisitive sea lion – you might even get a kiss if you're lucky. All the environments are safe and controlled, and you'll be under the constant supervision of aquarium staff, who will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Those who are feeling brave could take a dip in the shark enclosure where you'll be able to swim alongside tiger sharks and bull sharks. There's nothing to worry about though as there’s a see-through wall separating you from them! The aquarium provides snorkels and masks for any hardy souls willing to give it a try.
Then there's the dolphin lagoon where you can enjoy a dolphin show and also get in the water with them. This time you will have full contact, and will be instructed on how best to interact with these gentle and friendly creatures. There's nothing quite like being pushed through the water by dolphins!
The interactive aquarium is in La Isla shopping centre, which is within walking distance from many of the hotels and resorts in the hotel precinct. It’s also very easy to get to by bus and taxi, and there’s paid parking in the hotel precinct for those who have their own transport. The aquarium is open seven days a week, and there’s a small admission fee.
