Hidden beneath limestone cliffs are these three beaches that offer peace and quiet and some of the best sunsets on the island.
Cupecoy Beach is made up of three sandy beaches that locals say are the most picturesque on St. Maarten. Scramble down the cliffs that surround the beaches and you’ll soon see why. The limestone cliffs make a stunning backdrop to the white sand and sparkling blue waters. Cupecoy tends to be quieter and more peaceful than other beaches on the island, thanks to its secluded location. During high season the beach is “clothing optional”. Come here to escape the crowds on the busy Dutch side of the island.
Be careful making your way down the cliff. There are carved steps that show the way. The descent can be a little difficult but it will be well worth it once your toes are in the sand. The tourist villas, shopping district and packed bars and restaurants of St. Maarten that are only minutes away will feel like a different island. Go for a swim in the warm Caribbean water and explore caves and rock formations along the cliffs.
Hire chairs and umbrellas from the beach shack that also sells snacks and drinks throughout the day. The entire beach is popular with nudists, although you’ll find plenty of families who still bring their children along to play in the clean sand and safe waters. The far end of Cupecoy has become a popular gathering spot for the gay and lesbian population on St. Maarten.
Depending on the weather, the waters at Cupecoy can be gentle and perfect for swimming or rough surf that’s best for surfing. Bring your own surfboard or hire one from vendors elsewhere on St. Maarten.
Come to the beach at dusk. Cupecoy is meant to have the best sunsets in the area and is regularly packed in the late afternoon. Join photographers lining the cliff top to watch the sun set.
Cupecoy is located on St. Maarten, just below the French border. You’ll find the entrance to the beach in front of the Blue Mall shopping centre. Get there by car or taxi from other parts of the island. There is parking available during the day for a fee at the Blue Mall.
