Lake Mapourika

Whilst driving in the early frosty morning in June on the final leg of our road trip around New Zealands South Island, we spotted a flash of Lake Mapourika through a little open space in the trees. We had to turn around to check it out, and were treated to a beautiful view of the morning mist rising from the lake. #Blue Travel Photo Contest

On the west coast of New Zealand's South Island is Lake Mapourika, next to the stunning Franz Josef Glacier. Normally calm and as still as a mirror, if the weather is shining you can usually see the year-round glaciers across the lake. One of the best ways to experience it is at sunset by kayak with Glacier County Kayaks
This is a beautiful area to visit, we stopped for a bit of a fish - we didn't catch any trout but the scenery was very gorgeous with the fog above the lake
