Unfortunately our stay was cut very short as the room we were given (21) was in very poor conditions and the owners were not willing to accommodate us into another room. The room had an extremely strong smell of deodorizer, it was a very strong chemical smell and due to poor ventilation, although we set outside for over 30 minutes with the door open, the smell was still very strong. The owners told us that all their rooms had air fresheners, while we were waiting we talked to another guest who welcomed us to their room, and there were no air fresheners there (24). I am not sure why they would be so deceitful but we felt like we were just numbers, there was very poor customer service or even a desire to help. The deodorizers may be used to mask some other smell in the room, from older multiple reviews from 2 years ago we read, there were several complains about mold and musty smell, considering the room is still extremely outdated and old with horrible carpeting, that we me causing the smell that needs to be masked. Unfortunately they would not even partially refund the future nights, but for our own health and sanity we could not stay there. Luckily our next stop on our drive was able to accommodate us a couple of days earlier and we had a comfortable place we could actually enjoy for the next day when it poured. 9 stays in this trip in New Zealand so far, and this has been the only bad one, and the only unfriendly staff. On a positive note, the grounds and kitchen were ok.
