Galleria Umberto I

Regarded as a cultural meeting place for the public, this spectacular shopping gallery promotes Naples as a hub of expression in terms of fashion, art and music.

The Galleria Umberto I is located in the east of Naples, opposite the famous San Caro Theatre, an area known for its architecture and cultural pursuits. It was constructed between 1887 and 1891 with the aim of creating a cultural and public meeting space for everyone to enjoy. The building was named after King Umberto I who reigned at the time of its construction. It was the cornerstone for the rejuvenation of the Neapolitan cityscape, and today houses cafés, gourmet restaurants and boutique shops on the first two floors with stylish apartments making up the third floor area.

The spacious corridors seem almost open-air as an inundation of light pours in through the central glass dome as well as through the vaulted glass ceilings that cover each of the four wings. It reaches 56 metres at its highest point and all of this light lets you truly appreciate every facet of the structure's ornate architecture and elaborate design. Concerts, fashion shows and art exhibitions often take place at the heart of the complex and make for an added cultural experience. A mosaic floor of the signs of the zodiac extends from the centre down each of the four halls explore each one to find your star sign and get a little shopping in along the way, of course.

Take the edge off after your shopping spree with an Italian-style coffee for a much-needed boost before heading into round two. Or, if you're done with the shops, why not treat yourself to something a little sweeter? Take a load off your feet and indulge in a gelato ice cream as you watch the fashionable locals stroll by.

The shopping gallery is open every day with some cafés and restaurants staying open late at night if you want to head out for a romantic, moonlit Italian meal. Galleria Umberto I is easily accessible and is regularly serviced by bus via the ANM routes 1, 2 and 3.
