"We loved the setting and the friendly staff, all of them. We especially liked John, who helped us to our room with the luggage cart. Our dinner at the pub was delicious and had big views of the grounds and the Columbia River. I was disappointed that I chose to pay for the room when booking the one night to save $40 but then was charged a $40 resort fee when I checked in. "

"Very beautiful property right next to a much more expensive resort. Rooms are a little dated, but are very clean and utilized well. While there are not really any amenities, the view and walking trails alone make up for it greatly! Would definitely book again!"

"Interesting experience. There is no on-site staff, but the building is in excellent (restored) condition. You let yourself in with the door code and then you’re on your own. The on-site restaurant is not operating, so we drove a couple miles for dinner. We made breakfast from what was on site. Thankfully there was no noise from the railroad outside. We’ll be back."

"Very unique. It's a step back in time. Don't expect modern resort but you will get friendly authentic service provided by local people who bend over backwards to fulfill your needs and interests. Dufur is a very small old rural historical town in, what some would call, the middle of nowhere. If you want seclusion and enjoy country walks or bike rides and meeting really interesting people the Balch Hotel is for you as it was for us. The people really are fantastic.
