The food is excellent, the setting lovely, the rooms incredibly cramped and awkwardly designed, but most striking was the indifference of many of the staff. So much can be overlooked except for the painfully long waits at the restaurant, or to get a beach towel, or the difficult process to book a (very middling) massage. Also, the strange reliance on paper checks, but QR code menus.
The room (we booked a beachfront treehouse) was funky, with an incredible view, lots of steps, the smallest bathroom and least ergonomic shower I’ve ever seen. It also had a balcony with an outdoor shower and steps leading up to a rooftop deck that had a double chaise. There was no chair or table anywhere. The lighting in the bathroom was…well, wasn’t; there was no way I could shave my face unless it was during the day. You’d never be able to satisfactorily apply makeup.
Nômade arranged transportation for us from and to Cancun airport. They do not factor cushion time for problems. We very nearly missed the ferry both times. On the way home, it could have easily meant a missed flight and another night stay.
We wanted Nômade Holbox to be great. It could be, but it just isn’t.
