About Bandung

Bandung is one of those places most visitors cannot forget after visiting. The capital of West Java in Indonesia has everything that the third largest city of this vibrant country should have and more: colourful markets, great shopping, lively cafés hidden in post-colonial buildings and the busiest traffic in Indonesia. It is true that Bandung is overcrowded and polluted, but it is also lively, exotic and a great starting point for many one-day trips into the countryside.

Don’t Miss

The city is a home to many museums and institutes as well as some beautiful post-colonial architecture. Museum Geologi is worth paying a visit to find out more about the volcanoes and geography of Indonesia. Bandung is surrounded by mountains, rice fields and tea plantations which can be explored by car or on a motorbike. The major attractions are: Mount Tangkuban Perahu - an active volcano with hot water springs, and Kawah Putih - a beautiful lake in a volcanic crater. From the latter it is only a five-minute ride to the nearest tea plantations, which are ideal places for a walk in the cool of the afternoon.

Bars and Restaurants

There is only one place in Bandung where visitors need to go to try out all the local food. Burangrang Culinary Street is famous for its many cafés, street food stalls and hawkers. There is no better place in the whole city to eat cheaply and well. Some have said that a lot of eateries in Bandung focus on creating new tastes and not making sure the food tastes good; however, it is possible to sample food from different places and stumble upon something really delicious.

Shopping

Shopping is another reason why Bandung is famous in the region. Many items, including clothing and accessories, are cheaper here than anywhere else in Indonesia. Factory outlets and shops selling rejected export products from Zara, H&M and other retailers are very popular and many Indonesians travel here from Jakarta to buy these at lower prices. There are three main places in the city to shop for such treasures - Dago, Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Riau - all three have a large number of shops where brand name knock-offs are mixed with the genuine stock and it is easy to find a real bargain.
