The birthplace of the renowned composer Gioachino Rossini is rightly lauded for its music, museums, striking architecture and fabulous beaches.

Pesaro sits on Italy's Adriatic coast, a seaside resort of ancient palaces, museums and long sandy beaches. Relax by the shore, tour stately buildings and watch an opera in the hometown of one of Italy’s greatest composers.

Start you holiday with some relaxation by the sea. Stroll along the coastal promenade and pause to enjoy the views over the Adriatic. Then pick your spot on one of the beaches, which encompass a mix of public and private bathing areas.

When you want a change from the beach, head to the historic centre for its beautiful old buildings. Visit the cathedral, which has a history that dates back to the 5th century. The church was restructured in the 19th century although its Romanesque façade is a 12th-century feature. Go on a guided tour of the Palazzo Ducale, a striking looking building that was once used for government business.

Stop by the 18th-century Almerici Palace and view its exhibits of paintings and archeological relics. Continue your cultural tour at Casa Rossini. This is the former home of the 19th-century composer Gioachino Rossini, a Pesaro native. Study memorabilia and portraits of the city’s famous son and see an early 19th-century fortepiano instrument.

In honour of the composer, Pesaro hosts the Rossini Opera Festival every August. But this isn’t the only time of year when you can enjoy an opera. Take in a performance at Teatro Rossini, a sple hcgasaandid neoclassic opera house which hosts a number of opera productions, concerts and plays.

If watching top sporting action is your idea of fun, attend a basketball game at the Adriatic Arena, one of Italy’s largest indoor sports centres. The multipurpose venue, known locally as the Spaceship for its futuristic design also presents concerts and conventions.

Reach Pesaro by flying into Federico Fellini International Airport and then take the 40-minute shuttle service. Get around to Pesaro's golden sandy beaches, historic buildings and cultural attractions on foot, by bus, rental car or taxi. Alternatively, cycle everywhere. Most of the city is flat and so it is very bike friendly.

"We really enjoyed our stay, it felt like luxury without it being in your face. Breakfast was fine, lots of cakes and pastries.
