Gothic Basin is a great backpacking hike or long day hike. Off the Mountain Loop Highway near Barlow Pass, it is a great way to scope out all the peaks in the area.
Diablo Lake is a reservoir in the North Cascade mountains of northern Washington state, United States. Created by Diablo Dam, the lake is located between Ross Lake and Gorge Lake on the Skagit River at an elevation of 1,201 feet (366 m) above sea level. The unique, intense turquoise hue of the lake's water is attributed to the surrounding glaciers that grind rocks into a fine powder that is carried into the lake through creeks. That fine powder stays suspended in the lake, giving the water its brilliant color. #nationalpark #roadtrip
The lake is that blue-green color nearly all year long, fed by glaciers melting down the North Cascades. I drove by this spot for four days straight and never really got used to it.
Grab a grassy seat at the top of the hill at Gas Works Park for one of the best views of Seattle. Perfect for July 4th fireworks viewing, sailboat spotting, or picnicking and cloud gazing.
Thor's Well on the Oregon coast appears to be the end of the earth. Also known as the drainpipe of the Pacific, the well is actually a hole in the rock that only appears to drain water from the ocean. In reality the huge hole is likely only around 10 meters deep. Even if the well is not quite as magic as it seems, it still manages to produce amazing sights, though not for the faint of heart!. The site is most spectacular at high tide when the water washes violently over the rocks and funnels into the hole. I arrived here just before sunset and as I made my way down to the spot I saw small group of photographers standing on a rock right in front of the hole with their tripods already setup and taking photos. I managed to squeeze myself between a couple of photographers and began shooting however it wasn't long before the waves got higher and eventually swept up onto the rock we were all standing on, soaking our feet. We would have easily been swept away by the torrent had it not been for the rock we were all standing on. The sky was stormy and as the sun set over the horizon the colour in the sky turned a beautiful orange glow , perfect.
