Kowloon, Hong Kong Guide

Facing across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon is one of the most exciting travel locations in the world. Nathan Road is the main road through Kowloon. Nathan Road and its surrounding streets are lively from day through night. These streets have a dizzying collection of shops, while local restaurants offer a fabulous range of Hong Kong food specialties like dim sum and beef brisket noodles.

Don’t Miss

A walk along Kowloon waterfront known also as the Avenue of Stars, much like the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Pose by the impressive statue of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan’s handprints in the ground and more famous celebrity imprints. Then take a trip across Victoria Harbour on the Star. Every evening at 20:00 there is a light show on both sides of Victoria Harbour. Watching Hong Kong’s famous skyscrapers bathed in colourful lights is quite a remarkable sight, best viewed from a height.

The infamous building called Chung King Mansions is just a few minutes’ walk from the waterfront and is packed with cheap and cheerful market stalls and cafés. Not the fanciest of places but its come to be a little bit of a marker of Hong Kong culture.

The construction of skyscrapers in Kowloon saw many of the district’s colonial heritage buildings demolished. A remnant of the past is 1881 Heritage. This building was the marine police headquarters and has been restored to offer glimpses into Kowloon’s heyday.

Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin is a typical Chinese-style temple on the north side of Kowloon. A selection of museums includes those themed on space travel and science. The Hong Kong Story at the History Museum illustrates Hong Kong’s heritage. Kowloon Park is a peaceful location to relax right in the middle of the urban jungle.

Restaurants and Bars

Nightlife in Kowloon offers a good range of lively bars and nightclubs, and an even more wonderful choice of restaurants. Turning into any street off Nathan Road in the southern Tsim Sha Tsui area of Kowloon near Chung King Mansions, provides diners with a choice of Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Thai and international restaurants. For a bit more partying, Lan Kwai Fong comes to life at night with patrons spilling onto traffic-free roads, creating a nice party area not restricted to the defined space of each bar. For more food, at the massive Harbour City Mall there are 50-plus eateries serving up all sorts of great Asian and Western food in Hong Kong.

Shopping

Shopping in Kowloon is heaven. The range of merchandise on offer is as good as any in the world and with prices that are not too high. Boasting almost 500 shops, Harbour City is the ultimate destination for discerning shoppers. Chanel and Louis Vuitton are among the outlets in the mall. Chung King Mansions is best for souvenirs and knick-knacks. Temple Street Night Market is a busy spot where jade, antiques and clothing are among items sold. The Mongkok-Sham Shui Po region of Kowloon has lots of computer and electrical appliance stores.
