Fort Scratchley is situated on the high ground overlooking Newcastle, its harbour entrance and coastline. Its elevated position made it ideal for protecting the city and for attacking ships. You can tour the Fort grounds for free; the old sandstone buildings that once housed the N.C.O’s and servants, the barracks and other military buildings are still there. And it is one place to go for beautiful views of the Newcastle area.
