Florianópolis is known for its many beaches, sophisticated city centre and informal status as Brazil’s party capital. This southern Brazilian city covers an island off the Santa Catarina coast. The city centre is characterised by cosmopolitan streetscapes, fine dining options and modern shopping malls, while the 42 beaches that surround the city are considered some of the finest in Brazil.
Explore the city centre to discover excellent shopping and sightseeing. Walk to the city edge for views of the now-closed Hercilio Luz Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Brazil. Visit the huge shopping malls of Florianópolis to find the latest items from top fashion outlets from around the world as well as jewellery, cosmetics and souvenirs.
For a change of pace, head to the iconic public market to immerse yourself in local charm. Pick up traditional baked goods and seafood, fruits and vegetables from local farms and waters. Stop at one of the restaurants and bars lining the market to try oysters, a specialty of the region.
Once you’ve stocked up on food, hop onto one of the many buses that travel to Florianópolis’s 42 beaches. The bus system is affordable, reliable and a great alternative to renting a car. Head north to Brava Beach, one of the best and most challenging surfing spots in the area, or visit the popular beachside neighbourhood of Ingleses do Rio Vermelho. Here the beach has a milder surf and is lined with resorts, bars and nightclubs and is a hub for the city’s nightlife.
With a subtropical climate, Florianópolis enjoys four distinct seasons and remains far less humid than others parts of the country.
