Once I had found the hotel entrance (which seemed at first to be just for the bar and café) and identified the reception desk (again no clear signage) I was efficiently looked after by a very competent receptionist. I arrived just after 2.00 pm and the room was already ready. This part of town, known as 'Little Basel'. is very pleasant, with a cosmopolitan population, plenty of shops and good transport (tram) into the centre of Basel. The location of the hotel has a bit of a village atmosphere, with quiet streets and a pedestrianised area going down to the river. It happens to be right on the edge of the red-light district (or more accurately green-line zone), but this being Switzerland that activity is extremely discreet, and the area feels very family-friendly too. My room looked out onto the square in front of the hotel, which is a pleasant space planted with shade trees and dotted with café tables. In the streets close by are some good, reasonably-priced family restaurants. If you had not been alerted to their existence, you might not notice the few places that presumably cater for 'green-line' trade, and again, these are very discreet. The area is also popular with all sorts of young people visiting bars, clubs and cafés, and at night it can be a little noisy, especially at the weekend. I needed to have the room window open and the sound of talking in the square outside was surprising loud all through the night.
