Mount Aso (阿蘇山, Asosan) is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu which most recently erupted in October 2016 but has since calmed down again. Aso's ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. In the center of the caldera stand the mountain's active volcanic peaks, including Mount Nakadake, shown in this photo.

Due to increased volcanic activity at the time of our visit, a no-entry zone was currently maintained and resulted in the closure of the ropeway, road and hiking trails to the crater. Still, from a distance, we were able to witness this rare display of nature's power.

"スタッフさんの対応は最高に丁寧でした。利用したのが10月というのもあってか、寒暖差の影響で夜は特にテント内は湿っぽく、カビの臭いが若干気になりました。ご飯はとてもおいしかったです。赤身が多いお肉がメインでとてもよかったです。自分でテント張るキャンプと違って至れり尽くせりでなかなか楽しい経験ができました。ぜひまた違う季節で利用したいです。"
