Booked here at the last minute for a short-notice trip, and made my choice largely based on availability, but I appear to have been very lucky to have chosen this gem of a place. Absolutely lovely hotel set in a really nice traditional building with more modern annexes at the back (but still in keeping with the original older building), very clean and comfortable rooms (including air conditioning), friendly and helpful staff, really nice atmosphere, and overall a very pleasant experience to stay there. And exceptional value for money too. I found this place by accident/chance but I would definitely stay here again by choice. A lovely experience, thank you.

Delightful hotel, beautiful and full of character. Been several times and like it each time. We went on the bank holiday unfortunately the restaurant was closed so had to take breakfast at the Crown which was just as nice.

Lovely property, good food. However, shower was disappointing as didn't work properly and the mattress was very old, and sunk in the middle.

Lovely overnight stay

This place is excuisit, didn’t realise how quaint it was when we booked. Room was modern and well equipped. Had snacks and drinks in the evening and an amazing breakfast. Found a finger nail and a long dark hair in the room that wasn’t ours but other than that was clean.

We had room 12 which was a little hot and stuffy. The overhead shower is broken. In need of refurbishment and some deep cleaning. As always, decent breakfast and the petite blonde lady was friendly and helpful. We always enjoy staying in Amersham. Hotel was busy.

I feel bad that I can't remember her name, but the waiter who served us the morning of our check-out was incredibly helpful and friendly. She went to your neighboring property to obtain some Vegemite for my sister! She's a real keeper. I believe her name started with a 'K', like Karine. We loved our stay, and would return in a heartbeat.

Needs a lot of attention and cleaning!!!!

I understand that the beauty of the hotel is its age, but the bathrooms were filthy. Our tub even had spiders in it. The sides of the bath have dirty stains running down it and our hand basin drain was plugged.

Poor sleep and service

Poor nights sleep due to loud staff in the hotel and kitchens waking us at 06:30am and then a fire alarm at 07:30am - reportedly a drill but I'm unsure why you would test the fire alarms at this hour. The service at breakfast was laughable with the staff member checking three times what it was I had ordered and then the food was cold and poor quality when it did come. Amersham old town is quaint and a lovely place to visit just outside london

Lovely coaching style pub setting

Just a one night stay between areas on holiday. Lovely old building - note this as it means the rooms do transfer sound. We could hear all voices below us and footsteps around. Luckily it did die down once the bar closed and only was noticeable again after 6.30am. But worth noting, room fitting with the old coaching style room, all functional and comfortable. Overall a lovely stay, staff were pleasant, breakfast a reasonable selection of both continental and cooked, our only comment would be that a member of staff accessed our room at 6.50am whilst we were still in bed as apparently there was an issue with the booking system and our room was not detailed as occupied. I made reception aware and they were apologetic.

So i stay at this hotel on and off for business and overal its a bit quirky but generally good. The goods: room a reasonable size, shower and bathroom good, bed comfortable, windows dont fit their frames ( avoid during winter) and they make up room everyday and refil the boarders biscuits... super important! Bads: twice now i have not been able to have dinner there because the fairly small resteraunt has an event or traing going on even though ive booked it in sdvance. Thats annoying. The food this week was really good, but it can be the opposite. It seems a bit random but if anything its getting better as is my review. Food can often take quite a while also. Breakfast is also good. Just emphasise the " on toast" for anything you expect to be on toast... because it wont necessarily be if you dont. Also just be aware that they are in the process of renovating the place although to be fair i have only seen the notice and the new furnishings but no work or disturbance. overall its fine for a short break ( in the warm months)

Great location and very quaint - but improvements are required. The room was warm and comfortable. We had a suite in the courtyard and it was noisy with people outside late at night who were hanging around and being really loud even though it was freezing cold. The bar staff were very helpful and polite. However the receptionists made you feel like you were a nuisance interrupting their conversation and lip gloss application (literally). On querying the newspaper that didn't arrive we were advised "oh I've chucked it on the table by the fire place - I don't know why I did that". Whilst you are requested to book a breakfast time slot - on arrival it was chaos. We were given the option to walk across the courtyard and eat in the bar, but that means going backwards and forwards to the buffet section in the cold. When the hot food arrived it was very nice food.

Very "average"

We asked to check in early as we were attending a wedding. They were happy to do this, although it was hard work! The shower didn't work and maintenence came quickly and changed the shower head over to the bath taps. We had to ask for more toilet paper. Thick dust in bottom of wardrobe, tile grout around shower full of brown scale, soap holder rusty, mirror over basin mottled, cobwebs around window that had clearly been there a long time. We found a purse/key fob behind the chair - left by previous occupant, so clearly that area hadnt been cleaned. Carpet felt a bit grainy, but was a dark brown colour so no obvious dirt. Curtains did not keep morning light out as ill fitting. The bed and pillows were actually very comfortable, which was a relief after noting all of the above. Staff were friendly and helpful although the check in was a bit shambolic aa the two male staff seemed a bit disorganised. Breakfast was ok - good choices. Ingredients used seemed really basic (ham for eggs benedict very average) We realise the hotel is an old, historic building, but there is no excuse for very poor cleanliness and the room (no 11) is definitely in need of an upgrade - furniture very dark and a bit tatty.

Beware if staying when there's a wedding on

Really friendly check in - quick and simple. When we arrived the car park was full but there is unrestricted parking on the street outside. We stayed in suite 303 which was next to the car park and close to the outside drinking area. The bathroom was on the ground floor with a set of steep(ish) stairs to the bedroom. Floor height varied by a few inches and it took us a few trips (literally) before we got used to the bump in the floor where it's carpeted over the beams. Whilst this amused us as to how clumsy we were, as this is at the top of the stairs, this could be a bit of a hazard. The room came with a Nespresso machine along with a complimentary half bottle of wine, crisps and chocolate raisins. It might have been handy to have a night light as one switch does both upstairs and downstairs lights. This meant we had to leave the bathroom mirror light on to get up and down the stairs safely at night. The bar area is clean and bright with plenty of tables and a typical beer choice. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Our main issue was with noise. The venue is used for weddings with a chapel at the rear of the car park and we had groups of people in the early hours that prevented us from sleeping until after 2am. This was followed at 5.20am with staff talking and moving furniture in the drinking area and then by guests dragging their suitcases through the gravel car park from 7am. So a far from perfect night's sleep. Check out was quick - there was no-one on reception

A lovely hotel but terrible sleep

Stunning historical building with oodles of character. Check-in was easy and although wasn’t given the option, when given the restaurant breakfast times, asked whether breakfast could be ordered to the room to discover - yes it could! Result! (& yes it was brought to the room on time next day and tasted amazing!) Popped down to an almost empty bar just after check-in (so mid afternoon) to find 2 others waiting at the bar and no staff. One guy had been waiting 10 minutes. I then waited another 5 minutes before staff returned with an apology and we were served. Bar was heaving later and they had enough staff on with minimal wait so hopefully 1st instance not usual. We were in room 6, above the entrance arch of the main building to access the rear of the property. On at least 4 occasions we were awoken by a cacophony of noise as various wheeled, am guessing dumpsters, were dragged across the cobbles below where we slept. The first time I honestly thought the arch was collapsing. I appreciate the hotel needs to operate 24/7 but wonder whether this could have been left to daylight hours. Oh, and we picked to stay on bottle collection day when the lorry draws up outside at some unearthly hour and tips all the glass bottles the hotel has been collecting, into the back of it - I’m sure this was out of the hotel’s control and I’m glad it was recycling but didn’t help our bad sleep. Probably my worst overnight stay but not all down to the hotel.

Quirky but inadequate

Stayed in a junior suite, quirky but actually had less real space than a standard room. The seperate "work area" was actually a tiny desk covered in stuff, under the stairs with barely enough room for an I-pad. Fortunately I had a multi-way extension lead with me as it also only had one plug socket available. The idea of a separate work space is that one of you can sleep in the bedroom whilst the other works without disturbing them. the workspace was downstairs next door to the bathroom, that would have been fine but the light switch operated all the lights. All on or all off, plus only one bedside cabinet, one bedside light and the partner away from the bedside light and light switch (which was half behind the headboard) had to rouse the other to turn the lights on to navigate the wonky floor and uneven stairs to go to the bathroom. The bathroom had seen better days, mirror is failing, no space for toiletries, no way to open bathroom window unless you stand on the side of the bath, nowhere for a couple to sit and talk. So sad as the room could be awesome - it needs someone to rethink the lighting and layout, the hotel obviously has high standards, bottled water, complimentary half bottle of wine & nibbles (nice touch) but no spare pillows, inadequate toiletries and towels, no way for both of you to share a cuppa in bed, No way to close/open the blinds, contortionist to open window. Could be superb, so close, but so far.
