The hotel is ideally located in the centre of Ambleside. We were in a 'lodge' behind the main building, which was accessed through a couple of doors. The room itself consisted of a large bedroom with doors to a balcony overlooking a stream /waterfall, which would have been lovely in summer (but was a bit damp to use in late October). The bathroom was clean and tidy, the shower had a good flow, but tended to splash on to the floor a bit due to a small partition. Wasn't an issue other than making the floor a bit slippy. Car park was busy, but always got a spot - you have to negotiate the rising bollards and use an exit code - drive up to the bollard when you arrive and it automatically retracts into the ground. You get the exit code from reception. Breakfast was the highlight of the stay - excellent staff who took very precise notes of what cooked food we wanted and delivered it quickly and without fuss. Good selection of fruit, yoghurt and other buffet based foods too. Would certainly stay here again.
Room was clean and comfortable. Bed was comfy with crisp clean linen and plenty of pillows. Ensuite bathroom was equipped with a shower offering very hot water. As this is a room only hotel there is no reception so you get a key for the front door.
The hotel is in a perfect location close to many walking routes and hills around Ambleside. We didn't need to use the car for two days. Free parking is available off-site. The town offers restaurants and pubs for all tastes. Some are quite pricey though. Overall we had a great stay in a beautiful location.
It was one of the cheapest options we found on expedia, but was a great place. The food was very good, the host is super friendly and nice.
Only downside is that it could be a bit warm, but a provided fan did the trick, and it is off of a busy trip so could be noisier than you are use to.
We first stayed here in 1989 and stayed numerous times in the 1990's, in 2001, 2002 and the last time in 2004. It had lost it's edge a little for us in the transition from a privately run and owned hotel to part of a chain (Von Essen). Recent developments, a new owner, and good reviews tempted us back and we were not disappointed! It isn't the same as in the days of Francis and Brian - it never could be - but it is still a unique experience. The position on Ullswater couldn't be better (I'd go for the views alone!), the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was exceptional without following fashion. Sharrow Bay always did things it's own way and that was what made it special. The décor and furnishings suit the house and location superbly and I'm pleased to see the Hotel still dares to be different in that respect. We won't leave it as long before our next visit. It is still Simply the Best!

The immediate friendliness and professionalism of the hotel's owners was apparent the moment I arrived with my needs and requirments dealt with, within minutes. I was settled in and comfortable before I knew it.
Much appreciated, especially the generously delivered local knowledge about the town of Ambleside itself.
Fantastic experience. Location is exceptional with great views over the lake and a great overall base to explore Windermere and surrounds. The rooms are tastefully designed and fully-equipped with everything you'd expect of a top hotel. A special thanks to the gentleman (I believe it's Thomas?) for being very accommodating in finding us room at the restaurant despite not booking in advance and generally making us feel very welcome throughout our short but enjoyable stay.
