When To Visit Langkawi

The best time to visit the duty-free island of Langkawi is during the dry season, from December to March. However, it is the hottest season when daytime highs can reach 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). It is also the most expensive time for booking flights and hotels on Langkawi.

The mid-season, from April to August, has occasional short showers and slightly cooler temperatures. September to mid-November is the rainy season, although there’s still plenty of sunshine each day. Seas can be choppy, ruling out boat tours.

Tip: Ramadan has special significance in the Islamic religious calendar, but it’s business as usual at high-end resorts such as the Datai.

Travelling to Langkawi

Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is served by several airlines including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Tigerair. Cheap flights to Langkawi are available from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Thailand and many other international destinations. Transfers to the Datai are easy with a private car and driver service.

You can journey by ferry from the mainland to Kuah. The trip takes 90-minute or you can charter a private speedboat for a fast but sometimes bumpy ride.

Tip: If you need cash, it pays to know that ATMs occasionally run out of money on Langkawi, particularly during festivals and on weekends. Obtain some Malaysian ringgit for tips and local purchases before leaving the mainland or use the ATM on arrival in Langkawi Airport.
