This picturesque village on the west coast of Lake Como welcomes visitors with its elegant architecture, laidback plazas, scenic viewpoints and mountain adventures.
Tranquil and unpretentious Argegno is a lakeside village with historic architecture, scenic walking trails and spectacular natural landscapes. Argegno straddles the River Telo on the western branch of Italy’s glorious Lake Como.The village dates back to Roman times and was once part of a medieval fortification that stretched along the lake shores to Isola Comacina.
Argegno’s attractive centre sits either side of the River Telo and spreads up the slopes of the surrounding hills. At Argegno Marina, find a lakeside promenade lined with cafés and restaurants, boat docks and a small shingle beach. Relax on a bench and enjoy uninterrupted views of the lake and its mountains. Swim and soak up the summer sunshine at the open-air swimming pool, Lido di Argegno.
Stroll along the village’s side streets to discover squares surrounded by colourful houses adorned with flower-filled balconies. Visit historic landmarks such as the Chiesa della Trinità, a waterfront church with a neo-Romanesque façade and a bell tower. Walk to the nearby hamlet of Sant’Anna to examine the 17th and 18th-century frescos at the Sanctuary of Sant Anna.
Ride the steep Pigra Cable Car to Pigra, a village set on a 2,789-feet (850-metre) high plateau. Visit the 15th-century Oratory of San Roccobefore setting out on a hiking trip to Mount Galbiga.
Active visitors might want to hike or bike in Val D’Intelvi (Intelvi Valley). Trails lead from Argegno to Lanzo, close to the border with Switzerland, and on to Lake Lugano. Discover hilltop villages and enjoy superb lake and mountains views. During the winter, drive out of Argegno for approximately 13 miles (21 kilometres) to go skiing on the slopes of Mount Sighignola.
You can reach Argegno in less than 30 minutes via buses from Como and Tremezzo. It’s also just a 1-hour drive from Lugano, Switzerland. The village’s quiet streets make it a great place to explore on foot. While you are in the area, go on a daytrip to Lenno, home to the magnificent Villa del Balbianello.
