Aegadian Islands

Embark on ferry trips to the mountainous trails and quaint fishing villages of these tiny islets off the Sicilian Coast.

The Aegadian Islands form an archipelago of five islands with dramatic mountains, scenic views and coastal walks. Visit any or all of the islets of Levanzo, Marettimo, Formica, Maraone and Favignana, the largest, to enjoy diverse and awe-inspiring terrain.

An afternoon of island-hopping will give you a glimpse into the islands’ culture and spectacular scenery. In Favignana, arrange a fishing trip at the harbor. Rent bikes and go cycling along the mostly flat terrain. Atop the island’s large hill are the ruins of a crumbling fortress.

Snorkel or dive in the blue-green bays, with Marettimo the most popular island for scuba diving. This island has many mountainous trails. Explore its scenic coves and rocky inlets. Sunbathe on the rocks and enjoy views from the range of charming beaches. You can also find sandy strands here. Expect hot summers and mild winters, with low annual rainfall.

The history around the archipelago is fascinating, especially related to the 3rd-century Battle of the Aegates Islands. Learn how the Roman troops defeated the Carthaginians. Several other historic peoples also held these islands before the Normans built fortifications on Favignana. Go to Levanzo to see evidence of Neolithic and Paleolithic cave paintings.

Find out about the islanders’ relationship with the fishing industry, with tuna the central focus. Among the annual events is the summertime Mattanza in Favignana, when fishermen massacre countless migrating tuna fish. While this was a common ritual during the industry’s heyday, today’s event is primarily a tourist spectacle.

The archipelago is located off Sicily, in the southwestern part of Italy near the toe of the country’s famed boot shape. The islands in the Mediterranean Sea are just across the water from Tunisia and Sardinia. Fly to Vincenzo Florio Airport in Trapani and take the scheduled ferry services to the islands.

Come to the Aegadian Islands for an idyllic setting with intriguing history and wonderful Sicilian Coast views.
