  • The Church of Santa Lucia, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, is located on the hill of the same name in the city of Viana do Castelo. The church was built on the site of a small medieval chapel, known as a pilgrimage site for people with eye diseases. The construction of the temple lasted from 1904 to 1959. The eclectic-style Miguel Ventura Terra project combines neo-romanticism, neo-Gothic and Byzantine architecture. It is generally accepted that the architect was inspired by the forms of the Sacre Coeur Basilica in Paris. To the foot of the church at a height of 195 meters above sea level there is a line of a funicular built in 1923. Tourists can take the elevator to the observation deck under the very dome of the church. A panoramic view of the Lima River valley, mountains and the Atlantic Ocean opens from the platform. In 1927, National Geographic magazine named this species the third most beautiful in the world.

Great room and very helpful staff. Brought us a fan to the room because the AC was turned off for the winter. The view from the room was breathtaking. Really comfy feeling at the property and cool things to see just a short hike or funicular away. The breakfasts were nice, rooms clean and comfy bedding. Would definitely go back to visit and stay. Just a chill place... especially in the off-season.

IT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF OURTRIP IN TERMS OF HOTEL the location is unique, with fab. views. the staff very polished, we had cookies, grapes and a small bottle of tawny port waiting when we arrived at 5 pm and sipped peacefully on our terrace with 2 chairs and small table, overlooking Vieana..\\ dinner was very good... not excellent.. but chef came around and talked to us.... a must at least for a nite..

It’s all about the location at the top of a mountain overlooking a jewel box of a church. This grand hotel was built in the early 1900’s. It has been renovated but is definitely an older property. Room was comfortable and the view was AMAZING. Breakfast was wonderful.

Wonderful place to stay

The hotel has the most beautiful views. We were given an upgrade and had a room overlooking both the sea and a the famous church which overlooks the city. At the same time we had a welcome gift of wine, heart biscuits, and grapes. The biscuits and grapes were replenished each day. The breakfast at the hotel was quality and in a beautiful room. This hotel is recommended. The staff are very kind

Great hotel.

Hotel beautiful but decor a little tired. Still in good shape! 5 Star for the hotel, 10 out of 5 Star for the staff. They were outstanding and the off season rate was unbelievable. If we return to Portugal it is on our list for staying!!

This is a first class hotel with responsive amd friendly staff. The location can be spotted from miles away at the summit of a very high hill above which provides wonderful sights of the city and river. The dinner was outstanding and the staff attentive.

This is a beautiful property with amazing views over the town and ocean. The hotel is lovely, a tad dated but it is beautiful. It is a twisty drive with switchbacks up to the hotel for those with my fear of heights!

The hotel sits at the top of a little mountain and has spectacular views. The service is great. Food is delicious and they serve a wonderful breakfast buffet. I hope to stay here again. You can take a funicular to go into town.

Hard to beat the views from this historic hotel. Perched on top the mountain overlooking the city of Viana do Castelo and the river below is breathtaking. Staff very helpful and professional. Rooms a bit dated but clean and comfortable. You may need to get creative to charge electronic devices as outlets are scarce. Nice breakfast with wide variety offered. Transport to town on the funicular is available during the day, ample parking at the hotel.

Great view and excellent service. The room was comfortable and the hotel is clean. The breakfast is fabulous. It was raining so that made walking down to town challenging but I loved it.

Stunning location. Adjacent to the Basilica. Easy access to town via funicular, 3 euro return trip. Weather can be an issue, in particular the fog. If it’s foggy you won’t have any view of the basilica or the ocean. We were blessed with sun for part of our stay! The only place to eat is in the hotel and we found it to be very good and at a reasonable price.

Gorgeous resort with amazing views!

We had a bit of a rocky start during our stay. First we had to wait for our room to be ready. To my surprise, the superior double room that I booked was much smaller than both the photo and description on the hotels.com website. When I went to questioned the front desk about it, I was told I had the correct unit booked! There were larger rooms on the website for less $!! Later we found out the a/c unit wasn't cooling off, front desk was called and informed the problem was with the third floor and "maintenance was looking into it"! We had to sleepwith the windows open to get some cool air into the room, which also meant waking up at crack of dawn because of light coming into the room. To be fair, the gentleman in the front desk was so embarrassed the next morning, that he immediately moved us to another room which was not only bigger but also had a balcony! He also apologized plenty for the A/C problem, something that the lady totally ignored the night before! As for the rest of our stay, gorgeous resort with amazing views. Restaurant serves very good breakfast and excellent lunch! Service was also superb at restaurant. Can't say at the bar because no one bother to show up to serve us in the 15' we waited outside at the table! Pool is gorgeous with amazing views of the ocean!

Excellent Pousada with wonderful views. Staff very friendly, room well equipped. Rooms at the front of the hotel have amazing views. Good buffet breakfast included. Restaurant was okay though not exceptional. Plenty of parking . Road up from town winding and cobbled but okay. Would stay again
