Tuoro sul Trasimeno is a picturesque lakeside town, known as the battleground where Hannibal’s Carthaginian soldiers battled the Roman army. Stroll along the town’s lakeside promenade, take a boat to the interesting islands found in the lake and discover the town’s fascinating historic attractions.
A village has stood on this site since the Middle Ages. The town takes its name from an old fishing technique that is no longer practical here. Notice a few remaining traces of medieval architecture as you explore the town. Hear about how the Romans were defeated by the Carthaginians at this strategic location between Tuscany and Perugia.
Admire the well-preserved features of the 11th-century La Pieve di Santa Maria di Confine. While its interior is closed to the public out of fear of a potential collapse, it’s possible to capture photos of its redbrick apse and square windows. A popular meeting point for travellers, this church is one of the largest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Trasimeno area.
Walk around the perimeter of Lake Trasimeno to reach Ranieri Castle, which belongs to the aristocratic Montemelino family. Marvel at the twin towers of this 15th-century structure and relish the unobstructed view of the lake. Other castles to look for in the area include Guglielmi Castle, Zocco Castle and Montali Castle.
Look for the interesting Campo del Sole near the town centre. This art installation features 27 spiraling sandstone columns with a sun symbol at its core. Catch a boat from the pier beside this exhibition to Maggiore Island, the second-largest of the lake’s three islands. Tour the island’s pleasant beaches, dine at one of its fine restaurants and check out the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo.
Tuoro sul Trasimeno is about 21 miles (34 kilometres) northwest of Perugia in central Italy. Find it on the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno between Castiglione del Lago and Magione. Arrive by air at Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi – Umbria International Airport or Firenze Airport near Florence.
