Tiel

Visit this town in the Rivierenland region of the province of Gelderland for a day of fun on the Waal River and to meet a cartoon character.

The municipality of Tiel, in the southwest of the province of Gelderland, is the perfect destination to visit the old city centre, cycle and walk along the Waal and Linge and become acquainted with Tiel's fruity past.

Cities often originate near water, so it’s no surprise that Tiel is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Already in the 10^th and 11^th centuries it was an international trade city that traded with Germany and England.

Many of the buildings in the old city centre are reminiscent of Tiel's wealthy past, such as the 15^th-century Sint-Maartenskerk, the Waterpoort and the Ambtmanshuis, the 16^th-century home of the former governor of Neder-Betuwe. Many of the buildings were badly damaged in the Second World War and later rebuilt.

The area around Tiel is also worth exploring. Jump on a bicycle or put on your walking shoes and explore the many walking and cycling routes in and around Tiel. A trip around Land van Maas en Waal, where you will have to take the ferry from time to time, is an absolute must! Take a trip through the Betuwe and stop to enjoy the cherries and other fruit that is available in the late summer.

And meet Flipje, the cartoon character that was once the face of Tiel's jam factory and continues to entertain young children thanks to books and comic strips. You'll find a collection of Flipje memorabilia in the Flipje & Streekmuseum.

Tiel is a compact town and easy to get around on foot or by bicycle. If you’re travelling by car, you can park at Waalkade, Oude Haven, Taluud, Burgemeester Hasselmanplein and Bleekveld.

You can also get around on local and regional buses, most of which stop at the train station. The train will get you to Utrecht in the west and Arnhem in the east in 35 minutes.
