Visitors are encouraged to learn about this key moment in US history and to explore the concept of freedom as a whole.

The National Constitution Centre is a hands-on museum, national town hall and civic education headquarters. Those behind it have gone to great lengths to ensure that the experience is relevant and enjoyable for children.

The experience kicks off with Freedom Rising, a 17-minute, 360-degree projection describing America's quest for freedom. A live actor narrates this fascinating show. Numerous other hands-on displays and interactive activities at the centre include a huge board game, the opportunity to dress up and “rule” over Supreme Court cases, and a paper mill and print shop.

Among the centre's collection of fascinating political artifacts are an 18th-century chair made for the First Congress and slave shackles from the 1830s. Also, look out for the detailed scale models of the White House, Capitol and Supreme Court.

Located in historic Philadelphia, the National Constitution Centre is close to Independence Hall, where the Constitution of the United States of America was first signed on 17 September 1787. Four years later, after amendments and ratification, the Constitution became the Bill of Rights.

The Constitution, the document this attraction is built around, is in fact just four pages long. Thanks to expert guides and further excellent displays, you'll learn exactly what it meant in the history of the United States and why it is just as relevant today.

Signers Hall, in which there are 42 life-sized bronze statues of the Founding Fathers, brings your experience to a fitting conclusion. Don't forget to have your picture taken “signing” the Constitution yourself.

The National Constitution Centre is, in its own words, “America’s forum for constitutional dialogue”. Afternoon and evening discussions are held here, providing further insight into the country's democracy. Book tickets on the centre's website.

The National Constitution Centre is situated in the Independence Mall. It is open every day, but not on Sunday mornings. Exhibitions and programmes change regularly, so check the official website ahead of your visit. Refreshments are available in the Delegates’ Café.
