Sitting prominently along the waterfront is the Musée Jean Cocteau Collection Séverin Wunderman. The low façade is spectacular, with jagged lines of white engulfing the exterior like long tentacles. Explore the equally impressive interior with more than 1,500 fine works of French modern artist and writer Jean Cocteau. On warm days, head for the cool, shaded streets of Vieille Ville, the Old Town. Admire colourful block houses and stop for a refreshing drink at a quiet, friendly café.
While you are in the area, visit the Basilique St-Michel Archange located just off Place du Champ. This early 18th-century Baroque church is flanked by a tall clock tower on one side and a taller steeple on the other. Attend the Menton Music Festival held on the church courtyard.
As the town centre begins to get busy, escape to one of the majestic gardens scattered across the region. A 10-minute drive west will take you to the rare and exotic flowers of Jardin de la Serre de la Madone. To the east, Jardin de la Villa Maria Serena is a maze of fragrant palm, olive and citrus trees.
The blue-green sea lapping invitingly against the beach nearby is tempting. You may not want to go anywhere else at all. Put your feet up and enhance your tan on the shore or enjoy a short swim before dinner.
