Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're prepared. We've made a list of handy tips and tricks that will get your Geneva holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a stress-free experience if you pack the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a fresh set of clothes and a few magazines. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your mobile phone, a charger, medications and maybe a cosy neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.

• Make sure you don't have sharp or pointed objects hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as fuel and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Go for shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to take a sweater in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Walk around the cabin and give your legs a stretch or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• Your boarding pass and travel ID will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don't hold up the line.
• After that, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might trigger the alarms. Items like your belt, jacket and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also likely that you'll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Sharp items such as knives and scissors are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them safely away in your checked suitcase.
