Across from Windsor on the River Thames, Eton matches its southern counterpart for grace and a place in British culture and history. The independent boarding school was founded in 1440 and has educated many of Britain’s most notable figures. Consider the list of writers who graced these halls, including novelist Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Huxley was once a schoolmaster here. Modern stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston and Damian Lewis also attended school here.

Eton is located on the northern bank of the River Thames, about 20 miles (30 kilometres) west of London and 7 miles (11 kilometres) west of Heathrow Airport. Take a 20-minute train from Paddington Station in London to Slough, followed by a bus or taxi.
