  • My dad's friend owns a really cool karting circuit in Pageas, a few kilometres from Chalus where I grew up in France. They are both hunters. I know this is not everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of people from that generation in rural France do like hunting, fishing, fetching mushrooms. There are woodlands all around the karting circuit. My dad and his friend have built some platforms in the trees, and from mid-October to mid-November they go there every morning to shoot migrating birds. Those ones are some sort of wood pigeons going from Eastern Europe / Russia to North Africa. I did my own shooting that morning... with my camera! The sunrise was spectacular with some nice pink colours and mist in the valley.

The desk staff at this hotel was incredibly unfriendly. We booked two nights total, coming and going. On the second arrival the desk clerk was rude, confrontational and we learned later a liar. The location on the river isn’t worth the toxic environment created by the desk staff. There are better friendly alternatives.

Le site est très jolie les alentours aussi beaucoup de bonnes tables. Le menu du restaurant de l'hôtel est gastronomique, le chef fait honneur à la réputation française.

Hotel staff where brilliant, very warm and welcoming. However we dined in the restaurant and whilst most of the waiters where great one was very rude and abrupt. This spoilt our whole experience of the hotel and restaurant. It was a shame because the rest of it was amazing.

Very nice place to stay! Sylvi and Samantha, the innkeepers/hosts were terrific. Very friendly and accommodating. I ate one evening in the hotel restaurant, and it was very good. Delicious! I recommend it highly!

Food quality excellent but only lukewarm

Our 2 nite stay at the Hotel Restaurant Charbonnel was a pleasant stay. Our annex room was lovely for 3 adults. We dined in their restaurant the first night. We ordered duck breast with sauce and vegetables. The restaurant was full and wait staff were very busy although manager sat out front and never appeared to help. After our main course was served we felt abandoned. Service stopped. Our biggest concern was lukewarm complete plates of food. So disappointing for this pretty setting. It was the last meal we ate there sadly. No one ever asked our opinion of the meal. Really too bad as the setting was welcoming. Brantome, however is a lovely town and we will return to a different location
