Wurttemberg State Library

Examine the books, manuscripts and maps, including one of the world’s biggest array of bibles, which make up the massive collection of this centuries-old library.

The Wüttermberg State Library (Wüttermbergische Landsbibliothek) has a huge collection of educational and literature artifacts covering a multitude of topics. Find books, music scores and newspapers in addition to photographs and multimedia pieces. With over 5 million media items, Wüttermberg State Library is the most extensive academic library in the state of Baden-Wüttermberg. It’s also an important center for cultural activities and exhibitions.

You can visit the library to both marvel at its vast catalogue and to sit and read a book of your choosing. Brush up on contemporary history in the library’s main collection, which consists of approximately 4 million books. Browse the displays of maps and atlases that have a strong focus on the states and regions of southwest Germany. Discover an archive dedicated to acclaimed German poet Stefan George.

See a series of medieval and modern manuscripts that date back to the 5th century. Some of the most precious manuscripts are fragments from the Vetus Latina biblical texts. Browse the 19,000 printed copies of the Bible written in more than 600 languages.

Sit down with a book in the library’s reading rooms. The Main Reading Room has a non-lending collection that ranges from geography to language, law and theology, among other subjects. Go to the Special Reading Room for the arts and music archive.

Ask at the reception about special events. Art expositions, lectures, private book exhibitions and talks are some past examples.

The library is just a 5-minute walk from Schlossplatz, in Stuttgart’s city center. The closest metro stations are Charlottenplatz and Eugensplatz. Metered parking is available on the library’s surrounding streets.

Wüttermberg State Library is open from Monday to Saturday, except for select public holidays. On Saturday it is open during the morning only. Visit the library’s official website to find out more about its collections, lending regulations and opening times.
