this place was really nice had a decent bathroom area, the kitchen felt a little bit dirty but not bad at all. the outside area was lovely. staff were kind and inviting. the beds were comfy and there wasnt much outside noise.

I always enjoy my stays at the Braemar House . Its also a historical building with a fascination history . Its in beautiful condition and an excellent presentation of the old charm of New Zealand not found in modern architecture . Cozy area for group meetings in the patio area and ample size kitchen for gatherings to prepare food . Love it .

Staff very welcoming and informative. Clean property, good location next to the river and not far from supermarkets. Would stay here again however I did have a few little issues. The doorbell outside wasn’t working so I had to wait at the front door for a while until someone saw my shadow in the glass and let me in. The room I was in with the en-suite would be a little bit cramped when full if there are 5 beds and 5 bags/suitcases as there isn’t much floor space. There also weren’t enough plugs. I could only find one set of 2 which wasn’t enough for the 3 of us that were staying there that night, especially as one of them was being used for the lamp. In addition to this, an early check out key deposit box would be good. You may have one but I couldn’t find it, I had to fling the key under the gap in the door to the office and hope it didn’t lodge itself under any of the furniture/slip out of sight.

Apologies for the doorbell issue. The painters did a water blast of the wall and water got into the bell mechanism. It is now fixed. We only used this room that night to accommodate extra guests because of a shortage of beds in town. It is not normally a dorm. We are addressing the plug issue and there was a well-marked key box in the kitchen.Enjoy the rest of your travels.

Alivereti since you gave a low score even though we waited up for you till after 11 pm, when people look at our other reviews your score says more about you than us. So that's because we couldn't give you a late checkout as well? Sad that you do not appreciate when people go out of their way to accommodate you and your family.

Lovely older style b&b, and staff were friendly and very helpful. Room was clean and comfortable, set with furniture consistent with the age of the building. Bed very comfortable. Access to tea and coffee, but no breakfast available. Could use youth hostel kitchen between 8am and 8pm.

The house is beautiful, very well located, stones away from the river and walking distanse to town. Spotless clean. Attentive hosts. We were lucky to be upgraded to the BnB. All perfect.

I spent two nights here, alone in the female dorm, which was great. The place is in a tip top shape, great attention to details, super helpful staff. It is near by the river and short distance to town. I would definitely stay again. Cheers

Was welcomed by name by pleasant owner. Lovely old house in convenient location. Would use again but request room with en suite. Mine was adequate but in outside wing. No breakfast provided.

Does what is says adequately
We stayed in the youth hostel family cabin; 1 double, 1 set of bunk beds and 3 single beds. This made it feel quite cramped. The en-suite facilities were basic but adequate. We had access to the kitchen, dining and lounge areas as with any YHA. No mod cons but perfectly adequate. The hostel is close to the river walk and so the town was easily accessed but in a residential suburb.

Great place, but unfortunate smell put us off!
The facilities were what you would expect for a hostel - budget, but clean and practical. I was looking forward to staying there. The lady at the desk was very friendly and helpful. We booked the family room which had bunks and a double bed just for a quick overnight stop as we were on the way to the snow. Unfortunately the smell in the room of damp/mould/something! disturbed me so much that I really couldn't enjoy the stay and I had a very hard time sleeping because of it. I actually bought a deodoriser at the local supermarket when we were out getting dinner to try and neutralise the smell and I even tried to mask it with my eucalyptus oil that I inhale, but to no avail. Was very disappointing that an accommodation place that has such a high rating had such an obvious damp/mould problem or something in that room. The carpet had stains on it and black patches that looked like there might be moisture or damp coming up underneath. As a nutritional therapist, I have a very serious radar for potential health hazards and I know that breathing in mouldy or damp air with spores in it can pose serious health risks for vulnerable individuals. I ended up with a sore throat the next day and wondered if it was partly because of sleeping the night in a very strong mould/damp smelling room. I don't like to leave any negative reviews for anywhere, but do hope that the hostel takes the time to find the source of the smell and fixes whatever is causing the damp/mould in there.

Hi Rachel, glad you could stay with us and sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay. If you had mentioned it to us, we would have moved you to another part of the facility. In our short tenure, we have been re-carpeting the whole facility and the room you stayed in is on the list. However, there is no damp or mould in the room as all rooms are regularly aired - especially during the wet winter we've just experienced. The room you stayed in had been closed because it had been raining that whole week and so there would be a 'closed room' smell. The older carpet has usage marks but everything is regularly cleaned. Hopefully, this will soon be remedied by the new carpet. The low price we charge for a whole family for that room also reflects where we're at with the refurbishment... Kind Regards Calvyn Jonker

Lovely old villa hostel
Welcoming and helpful staff/owners. We stayed in a budget family room which had comfortable beds with good heating. The kids loved playing with the dogs and cat in the garden. As they didn't have many guests they let us have their 'bed and breakfast ' breakfast in the main villa dining room, complete with silverware and china. It was absolutely delicious. I looked into the backpackers rooms and they looked just as clean and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Beautiful character house close to town centre
We enjoyed our stay in Braemar house very much, would recommend to Whanganui visitors. Room was clean with old feel, bathroom also clean and we had option to have shower or bath. Lovely and very helpful host. Stayed last weekend one night.
