Enjoy spectacular views of sunrises over the lake and the green mountains beyond from this charming town in the Adirondacks.

Westport is a small town next to Lake Champlain with picturesque views of the seemingly endless Green Mountains of Vermont. It is an enjoyable stopping point on the route to the Adirondack Mountains and lies inside the park of the same name. Find many summer and winter activities around the lake and many fairs and events year-round. Fish for trout on the clear, clean waters and enjoy the serene ambiance.

The town is known as the “Gateway to the Adirondack Mountains” due to its proximity to the stunning peaks. It experiences hot summers and cold snowy winters.

Play a few rounds of golf in the dramatic surroundings of the mountains at Westport Country Club. The acclaimed 18-hole course dates back more than a century. Rent equipment and a cart and enjoy views of the tree-laden mountains looming over the fairways as you play.

Stroll through Westport’s old-world town centre and peruse various antique shops and arts and crafts stalls. In summer, head to the lake’s shore and go for a swim.

Watch a Broadway-style show at the Depot Theatre in the town’s historic train station. To get a sense of the local culture, attend the Wadhams Farmers’ Market just north of Westport on Saturday mornings in summer.

In winter, try sledding on the mountains or ice fishing on the lake. Bring your own skis and other equipment to enjoy snowy peaks nearby. Whiteface Mountain is about 32 miles (51 kilometres) west.

The town is the birthplace of the Adirondack chair, which has a comfortable shape with a straight slanting back and wide armrests.

Westport is in Essex County in northeastern New York State. It is about 100 miles (160 kilometres) south of Montreal in Canada. Take the Amtrak rail system to the town from New York City in 6 hours. You can also take a bus from Lake Placid, about 35 miles (56 kilometres) away.

Visit Westport to find your special place between forest-covered mountains and the lake.
