Washington Monument

Washington Monument which includes a garden
Enjoy wonderful views of the city from the peak of the first civic monument that was ever dedicated to George Washington.

Located in the center of an urban square in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, the Washington Monument is a focal point of the leafy historic parks that surround it. Climb to the top of the monument for spectacular views across Baltimore.

The monument was designed by American architect Robert Mills, who later went on to design the taller Washington Monument in Washington D.C. The first cornerstone was laid in 1815, but construction work did not finish until 1829. Note the statue at the top of the monument, which depicts George Washington resigning his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

Constructed out of local white marble, the monument rises to a height of 178 feet (54 meters). On each of its façades are bronze inscriptions that document important events throughout Washington’s life. Look for a second, larger bust of George Washington at the entrance to the gallery, as well as a memorial plaque installed during the monument’s centennial.

Ascend the 227 steps to the top of the tower for spectacular views over Baltimore. Be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes as the steps are slightly worn in places. Bring your camera to capture pictures against the city backdrop.

Visit the gallery space and digital exhibits to learn more about the history of the monument and its restoration in the 21st century. Take an interactive virtual tour of the interior and exterior of the monument and observe live camera feeds from the top, perfect for those who can’t or do not want to climb the steps.

The monument is located in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Inner Harbor. Ride the purple line of the free Charm City Circulator bus to reach the monument. Drivers can take advantage of the many public parking lots in the vicinity.

The Washington Monument is open from Wednesday to Sunday year-round. Enter the gallery and exhibits for free. There is a fee to climb the tower.
