This hotel was a sanctuary of calm with forest views from every window, excellent food, very friendly staff, and a minimalist aesthetic. Bathrooms were shared as it provided a traditional Japanese experience but as someone who would generally avoid a shared bathroom this was more part of the experience than a drawback. Rooms extremely clean, calming, and comfortable with own sink and toilet.

實在太棒了，這旅館是家族經營，如其他評價所說，雖然偏遠在樹林裡，外出不便，但本身旅館的晚餐早餐同樣非常好，最高的美味！內部裝潢有格調，十分舒適雅緻，而家族風呂非常舒適，廁所也很整潔。記得預約吃這裡的晚餐，5000円一位，但不會失望的。

The most beautiful and cosy place to stay. So clean with such attention to detail and service. We also ate dinner at the restaurant both nights of our stay and are so glad we did - two of the best meals of our lives!

Pick up service to & from the train station was such a relief. Beautiful, clean and quiet setting, wonderful dinner and berankest on site, super friendly staff who also speaks English for international guests, we loved our stay here and it definitely enhanced our visit to Takayama.

Exceptional food
The stay was great. Simple, clean, good size room. My husband and I thought the food choices were excellently prepared and beautifully presented. The staff even took into consideration my gluten problem (Celiac) and adapted their menu for me!

A must go staycation in takayama
Only managed to book and secure a room for 4 person 6 months prior, but now we understood why. We 'd only stay for two days but the duration spend was cozy and magical. Mr Toshie & his staffs were also very helpful whenever we were in need of any help. They were willing to transport us to our desired places, free of charge . In addition both the breakfast and dinner serve was definitely one of the best Italian food we've ever tasted. Their helpfulness also made us felt at home as if we were family. SUPER!!!!
The best and most beautiful place I have ever stayed in Japan. It is run by a family, they are all very friendly and helpful. They picked us up from Takayama JR station. They are also happy to arrange free shuttle whenever you need. We stayed there for 3 days. They gave us 2 double rooms for 3 people and they only us by no. of head and not by the no. of rooms. I guess it is because the rooms at that time were not fully booked. Their food is one of the highlights!!! Free breakfast included! and it was the best breakfast ever. They also have a Italian 5- course dinner menu. it was soooo delicious so dont miss it!!!!

Wonderfully friendly staff. Hotel out of town, but picked us up and back to/from station. Also transported us to town and back whenever we asked. Great breakfast. The evening meal, although expensive, well worth it. Five course meal of really exceptional Italian style food. This because the owner is a chef of the highest quality (fine dining without the pomp). 5000 yen each, worth every yen. Hotel small and cosy in a outstanding location. Would stay here again anytime. More a home than a hotel.

Clean rooms and excellent service
Stayed for a night here and pretty much find it very enjoyable. Room is cosy and the staff are friendly and helpful. Free shuttle is provided from town and this place offers a quiet surrounding to chill and relax away from the city.

Beautiful accommodation with incredible staff
The best place we stayed in Japan. Out of this world beautiful. Incredible staff, nothing was too much trouble. They very kindly picked us up and dropped us off at the station. The food is also amazing - don't leave without having dinner here! The perfect stay.

the hosts at auberge hidamori were wonderful, not only were they accomodating, staying up to 2am awaiting our arrival, helping store my dad medications, they were very helpful and served the bests breakfasts!! their property was very well kept and had a great warm homely feel with a fireplace.

Cosy warm atmosphere. Welcoming hosts, ever friendly and always willing to help with advice and shuttle to and from the city. A bit expensive but worth the special experience. Amazing breakfasts and dinner!

Beautiful B&B on the outskirts of Takayama
Takayama is without doubt a beautiful and peaceful town in Japan, especially with it's famous Old Town. Auberge Hidanomori is no exception to this rule. Upon arrival, we instantly felt a sense of peace and warmth. The building and local environment is enchanting and streamlined. The staff are friendly, helpful and are able to speak very fluent and clear english. The bathing facilities are shared amongst guests, but are excellent in quality and include a private bath in the usual japanese style. The breakfast was tasty and filling. We would definitely stay again and recommend it to our friends!

Everything about this auberge and my stay was wonderful. I stayed for two days and wished I stayed longer. The staff is truly amazing and kind and helpful. They are always ready to greet with a smile. If you can, you should definitely have the Italian dinner one night. The chef does excellent culinary work and it was one of the best and most memorable meals I've ever had. The room was clean and simple. The atmosphere is one of a cozy inn. Breakfast is hearty and fresh! The surrounding area is tranquil and peaceful. I walked to the convenient store one day and it was nice to only be surrounded by trees and the sound of soft rain. The shared bathing room has a nice soaking tub (Japanese style where you take the shower first, then soak if you want). There's a lovely fireplace in the lobby where you can sit and read too. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities, head to Takayama and stay here.

only stayed two nights, but it was bliss!! amazing dinner- definitely recommend. guesthouse was beautiful, clean and peaceful, wish we could stay longer. the owners picked us up and dropped us off at train station, bus stop and restaurants and couldnt be more helpful. strongly recommend to stay here!

Lodge style auberge in woodland approx 7 mins town
Lovely setting, large communal lounge with wood burning stove. No en suite facilities, toilets on galleries off the stairs leading up to bedrooms. Washbasins and bathrooms also on galleries above lounge. Bathrooms are Japanese style with dressing rooms and shower/bathroom next door. Baths are deep double style with jacuzzi type jet circulating water - a great experience after a long day walking around Takayama! Staff were extremely attentive in every respect. Shuttle service on demand to Takayama, you can phone from virtually anywhere in the town to get picked up. Excellent breakfast, option to take an evening meal at the auberge, either pasta and salad or the 5 course Italian meal for 5,000 yen plus drinks. The latter is fine if you enjoy nouvelle cuisine. If we were coming back to Takayama we would certainly stop here again.

Leave Tokyo, stay here!
Decided to ditch Tokyo for takayama and could not be any happier with our choice. This place is ideal location for relaxation and is absolutely beautiful. The owners/staff are fantastic and super accommodating. Our only regret was a short stay, we should have lengthened it and explored the surrounding towns and so we will be coming back and staying here again!

Very clean basic "hotel" with a very friendly staf
This is an exceptionally "clean and tidy" place with a very friendly staff that speak English fluently. The breakfast is superb (NOT a buffet) - it is served to the table and is just enough to get you start the day (very tasty). Rooms are basic. There are two disappointments that we faced (after paying over $230 per night for a room of three): 1. Showers and toilets are shared, and showers cannot used after 11pm. There are 2 men and 2 women toilets for all guests and only two showers for all guests. 2. We stayed one night at the beginning of Aug 2016, and it was very warm (the room is air conditioned and very pleasant, but once one leaves the room to the toilet, bathroom or anywhere else, it is very warm). Overall, we highly enjoyed the good taste, clean place, friendly staff and the good communication - just be aware of the baths/toilets and make sure you are not sensitive to heat during the summer.

Owners are great , very accommodating and will collect and drop you off in town so easy to get around. The hotel is very good and has character. Food is great breakfast is served (its set and was different each day for the 2 days we were there t sure if you had preference they would try accommodate you). Dinner was great and very friendly atmosphere all round. I would certainly stay there again if I ever get chance to be in this part of the world again.

This place is amazing. We were picked up from the station and was an easy drive. Owned by a chef who cooked us the most amazing dinner and breakfast. Dinner was one of the best Italian meals I have had with fantastic service and great wine. Breakfast was also the best I have had in Japan as they are generally not that great at it. The bedding was comfortable and so warm. It was great to have a bath (onsen of sorts) at the end of a cold day. The only negative was it was a little bit far from town to walk but they will drive you into town in the morning. Overall the best accommodation we have had in a very long time. Would recommend this place for a break from busy japan.

A gem in the woods!
Stayed for only a night but will definitely come back again. Didn't realize the owners are certified chefs and thus didn't budget for the Italian dinner at 5,000 yen per head. Very friendly and helpful hosts. Nice big house with shared bathroom & toilet. Very nicely decorated & maintained & clean!

It's not near the JR & bus terminal. But we can call the pension to arrange for pick-up and they will reach the JR around 15 min. The staff also send us to the JR when we ask. Delicious breakfast and we got different variety everyday throughout the 3 days. Mr Toshi also gave great recommendation to visit Shin-hotaka after checking the weather and we got to see the alps with clear blue sky. Thanks :)

Memorable stay at the Pension Hidanomori!
Really great experience staying at the Pension Hidanomori. Toshi and his wife are very welcoming hosts and incredible chefs (their Italian dinner was outstanding). Grounds are quiet and peaceful and the rooms and facilities are all spotless. Hope to stay here again in the future.

A cosy pension to stay!
The place was good for city getaway, very cosy place! The room doesn't have attached bathroom we usually prefer to have one. However in the shared bathrooms do have a hot bath tub each respectively. The breakfast was yummy and the transfer service was good as well. Recommended to those want to have a relaxing holiday.

Helpful staff, pretty location and good food. It's on the outskirts of takayama, but a quick 10 minute drive to the train station. Takayama was pretty quiet at night when we were there, so being away from the town center our second night didn't seem like much of a tradeoff. Bathrooms were shared for the room we were in, but the onsen was a cool feature.

Very nice couple running this small boutique hotel in Takayama. We had an excellent Italian meal in their restaurant and breakfast also was very good. They picked us up at the train and in town after we were finished sight seeing. Highly recommended for the calm and quiet.
