Use this Santander neighbourhood as a good base from which to explore the city's beaches and many cultural and historical attractions.

San Martín is a residential neighbourhood in the northern Spanish city of Santander. This is the capital of the region of Cantabria on the country’s northern coast. While this part of the city is geared more for residents than visitors, it is well connected to beaches and other major attractions by roads and public transportation.

Within a 10-minute bus ride, you can be in the heart of the city, a downtown core with a number of fascinating sights. Tour Santander Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece that dates back to the 12th century. Venture down into the crypt to visit the 13th-century Iglesia del Santisimo Cristo. Look through the glass panels that cover the floor to see Roman archeological remains.

Wander through the exhibition halls of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander. Peruse works by Francisco José de Goya and other national and international artists. Appreciate the stately architecture along the Plaza de Pedro Velarde. This neoclassical square was constructed during the decade following the 1941 fire that destroyed much of the city's historical quarter. Look up at the statue of Pedro Velarde, a hero of the Spanish War of Independence which took place in the early 19th century.

A stay in San Martín also puts you near several beaches, such as Playa de los Peligros, which lies close to the city centre. Walk, drive or take a bus to Playa de la Magdalena, a long sandy beach with calm water that is good for swimming. Nearby is the Maritime Museum of Cantabria. See model ships and exhibits that focus on man's relationship with the sea. Wander around the aquarium, which features marine species found in the Cantabrian Sea.

If you are travelling to San Martín from North America, the most convenient route is by plane into Madrid-Barajas Airport, 270 miles (440 kilometres) away. From there pick up a rental car or make the journey to Santander by bus.

Nice hotel shame about the town
It is a a good budget hotel. The rooms are clean, tidy and a good size. There is limited parking on site but plenty nearby. No bar or restaurant and the wifi is limited to downstairs. The town offers very little and the only cafe serving food wàs a burger bar.
