"A lovely place to stay for our ruby wedding anniversary. What a romantic unique venue. We stayed for 3 nights in the castle. Our daughter and partner came too. We had a wonderful time"

"Check in through hatch in entrance hall. Normally somebody nearby. Room clean with everything required. Good size shower. Could not get TV to work as batteries seemed to have given up in remote. Not bothered as just used laptop. We had dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it although was a bit of a wait. Everything cooked fresh so to be expected. Chicken parmo a good choice. Very comfy bed and very quiet location. Could hear room nextdoor with TV on quite loud. Well worth visiting the nearby small church, one of the oldest in UK. Good breakfast with tasty cooked options. First choice for hotel in this area and already booked to return soon."

"Stayed here 2 years ago & enjoyed it. Bit disappointed this time. Room tired & needs decoarating & a good clean (alot of dust) Didn't get breakfast. Waited an hour to be told the chef hadn't seen our order so gave us money to go elsewhere, unfortunately didn't have time so didn't eat until later in the day! Tbh they should re-think breakfast service as they don't seem very well prepared. Maybe look at taking orders from guests the day before? Staff are lovely though. Don't think i'd stay again unless rooms decorated & breakfast situation sorted out."

"Large pub, nice bar/dining room, good decor, parking very handy,eleven rooms, we had a nice large twin bedroom, main road facing little noise good shower, toilet had poor flush, beds comfortable, wardrobe had a extra duvet which smell very badly of sick, i give it to the cleaner then open the windows not to bad after that. Nice setup for breakfast full breakfast not big but enough, staff very friendly. Pub very central for the town and surrounding areas, we were there for the weekend and went out on the Saturday night and found the eight or so pubs in the village were dead"

Appleby Castle

"Staying at Appelby castle was an experience we combined it with a performance of the Handlebards in the grounds. The owner Sally is lovely and Peter manager slways helpful. We stayed in what was the ' servants quarters ' on the top floor. Unfortunately it had a parapet window so no views but the room was spacious the bed comfortable , nice linen and towels and a good shower. The floor in the bedroom and to the shower was sloped so not recommended for anyone with mobility issues the room was up 3 flights of stairs the last ones quite steep. We didn't have dinner but had breakfast . It was ok. With a bit of tweaking it could be v good . Ie better choices of cereal , fruit and availabity of yogurt. English breakfast was fine but would have been nice to have toast and jams after. Coffee was Ok. At about ยฃ16pp it was expensive for what was available. The castle is tired but has so much potential . We were disappointed that the museum in the tower was closed . With a little bit of tweaking the experience could be so much better but we enoyed our stay and would consider staying again"
