Praia dos Olhos de Água

Experience the authenticity of the Algarve’s fishing heritage at Olhos de Água Beach (Praia dos Olhos de Água). This beach is where locals come to top up their tans and cool off in the warm water while fishermen bring in their day’s catch. Olhos de Água Beach sits on the shoreline of its eponymous village. Its name means eyes of water, which is a reference to the springs that form at low tide.

The beach boasts a beautiful strip of soft sand that becomes especially crowded during the peak summer months. Rent umbrellas to protect you from the sun and loungers for extra comfort. The consistently mild water makes swimming an enjoyable year-round activity.

At both sides of the bay are the craggy hills and rocks characteristic of the Algarve coastline. Look for fish in the natural pools and walk along the seashore to discover sheltered coves. Rising above the eastern side is the Miradouro da Praia lookout. Climb up the dirt track to the summit and enjoy the far-reaching coastal views.

Spend some time observing the fishermen, who congregate on the beach’s east side. Watch as they tend to their colorful boats and prepare fish to be sold to restaurants and at nearby markets. The row of blue-painted huts is a classic image of the beach and village.

Situated about 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) east of Albufeira, the beach is an excellent daytrip destination. Public buses connect Albufeira with Olhos de Água village on a daily basis. If arriving by car, you’ll need to park in the village and then walk down to the beach.

Complete your visit to Olhos de Água Beach by dining at one of the waterfront restaurants. Sample fish and seafood delivered direct from the boat. Arrive in the evening, grab an outdoor table and wait for the sensational sunset to take place. More bars, cafés and restaurants line the street that leads from the beach to the village center.
