"This is an interesting, old facility, probably best suited to a budget traveler who is using Amtrak (extremely convenient), wants a small town experience, or has something to do in town at the theater, or in nearby Lebanon or Hanover, NH.
The check-in was quite personable.
The facility itself feels a bit like an ancient aircraft carrier. The upper floors feature long corridors. A portion has been given over to Hostelling International and operates on that basis. Creaky and uneven floors seemed pretty common. The furniture in the room, especially the chairs there, were the wrong side of the divide between shabby chic and shabby. Hot water took quite a while to arrive and the shower and tap water had a noticeable metallic taste and smell. That last aspect of this stay led me to alter my subsequent night’s stay on our journey to a chain hotel with a good shower.
There was a squadron of cleaners the morning we departed.
Of particular interest, the ground floor of the hotel structure is home to an impressive array of commerce. A walk around its perimeter demonstrates how significant that aspect of the Hotel Coolidge is to White River Junction. That aspect alone draws attention to this place, and makes it interesting.
The breakfast vouchers make a relatively expensive — though tasty — breakfast less so. If you’re really on a budget, they might be of limited value."
"1st - no dishes, silverware or cookware is included with your kitchenette. The property does have some they'll sell you. Housekeeping is only every 4th day, including trash removal.
That being said, the room layout was excellent, none of that wasted space that drives you crazy when you can't turn around in the bathroom. The air conditioning was on when we got there (90+ temps that day). Its a newer property but we did have issues the door latch and no maintenance person on site. It was clean and tidy but might have the slowest elevator I've ever been in. Luckily there are only 3 floors. Overall, not a bad stay."
Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites White River Junction by IHG
8/10 Good
"Despite no common area air conditioning and the elevator out of service, the room was clean and comfortable. And the staff were very nice! I will stay there again!"
"Great hotel! Our room was spacious and we loved having a full size fridge and mini-kitchen. Insanely loved the bath products (sorry, I love that kind of thing!). We had a great dinner at the restaurant which has a wonderful vibe and friendly staff. When we checked in, the front desk staff forgot to mention breakfast was included (clearly I had forgotten, too)-- took me 2 days to realize that! Breakfast was great. Another plus-- the gigantic backyard/meadow adjacent to the river is stunning and smores at night were an added bonus! They do a great job creating a hotel that is perfect for families, mountain bike travelers, horse show folks, couples getaways. Hard for one place to cover all that. I had booked via an online site which I thought included all fees but there was a small daily added cost. Overall though our total expenditure was LESS than other area hotels and really, this was so beautiful, immaculate, delish and otherwise very hospitable! We will be back!"
"It’s a typical inn—nothing more, nothing less. To be honest, I haven’t stayed at an inn in quite a while, so maybe this is standard now. There is no daily housekeeping unless you specifically request it. Even after we did, I’m 100% sure the bed sheets were never changed.
The shower water pressure is extremely low, although the water does get nice and hot. The towel warmer in the bathroom was a nice touch.
The most ridiculous thing in the room was the “mini fridge.” It’s more like the tiny fridge you’d use to store skincare products. If you want an actual mini refrigerator, you have to rent one from the front desk for $10 per day.
The on-site restaurant was also disappointing. Our waiter, Paul, was one of the worst servers we’ve ever had. He was rude, abrupt, and when I asked what the most popular items on the menu were, he appeared to read the menu while answering because he didn’t seem familiar with it. The food was bland and lacked seasoning, and my steak was cooked almost well done even though I ordered it medium rare.
Overall, we were not impressed and would not choose to stay here again."
