4/10
Disappointing - not a 4 star hotel
I’ve been coming to Nairn for over 20 years and this is my first time staying in the Muthu Newton hotel. We were given a courtyard room which was outdated, mouldy, unclean and generally in need of a major refurb. We paid £165 per night for a room barely worth £30 per night. We spoke to the receptionist about moving rooms. They consulted the manager who said we would need to pay an extra £10 per night to change rooms. We emphasised we were not wanting an upgrade - our room was frankly unclean, not up to standard and finally we were able to change rooms without charge. We were moved to a room in the main building which was better, but still not to the standard of a 4 star hotel. It still wasn’t particularly clean, the towels smelled and generally needed updated.
The staff at breakfast were friendly and helpful, but the breakfast was poor and not cooked well. This hotel has the potential to be beautiful, particularly with the location, but desperately needs a major refurb across the entirety of the hotel.
